Athlone sits right in the middle of the country, which makes it a popular base for people working across the midlands or wanting more space without being too far from Dublin. Our removals Dublin to Athlone service takes care of the whole move. Moving Service Dublin loads up in Dublin, drives west and unloads at your new home the same day.
It is part of our long distance removals service, and you can see everything else on our services page.
The drive from Dublin to Athlone
We head out on the M50 to the N4 and M4, past Maynooth and Kinnegad, then join the M6 and follow it west to Athlone. The motorway runs almost the whole way, so the journey is usually around an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from most of Dublin. Moves to surrounding areas like Moate, Ballinasloe, Roscommon side towns or the Lough Ree shoreline add a little time on local roads.
Athlone is split by the Shannon, with the Leinster side around Willow Park and the town centre, and the Connacht side around Monksland and Cornamagh. The town bridges get busy at peak times, so we plan arrival to avoid sitting in traffic with a loaded van.
If you are leaving a Dublin apartment, we plan around your lift booking and loading slot there first, then head straight onto the N4. Leaving the city mid morning usually means a clear motorway and a relaxed arrival in Athlone.
What is included in your Athlone move
- A fixed price quote covering the trip, agreed before the day
- Furniture wrapped in thick blankets and strapped in place
- Beds, tables and wardrobes taken apart and rebuilt where needed
- Items carried into the rooms you choose
- Full insurance from loading to unloading
For bigger homes we plan the number of trips or arrange a larger vehicle in advance, so the day runs to plan.

Moving to Athlone for work or study
Lots of our Athlone moves are people relocating for jobs in the town's large employers, or students and staff heading to the Technological University of the Shannon. These moves are often smaller, such as the contents of a one bed apartment or a room in a house share, and they suit our single van setup perfectly.
The older streets around the castle and Church Street on the west bank are narrow, with limited parking. Newer estates and apartment developments around the edge of town are easier. If you are moving into an apartment, check whether there is a lift and a loading area, and let us know so we can plan.
Moving to a lakeside home near Glasson or Coosan? Some of those roads are narrow with tight bends, so a quick photo of the approach helps us plan where to stop and how far we will carry.
Before moving day
- Confirm key collection for the new property
- Pack a bag of essentials to travel in your own car
- Label boxes by room
- Defrost fridges and freezers the night before
