The Dublin to Belfast route

We leave Dublin on the M1 past the airport, Drogheda and Dundalk, cross into Northern Ireland near Newry where the road becomes the A1, and then join the M1 again at Sprucefield into Belfast. The distance is around 170 kilometres and usually takes around two hours of driving, depending on Dublin traffic and the Port Tunnel or M50 approach.

The M1 has toll plazas on the Irish side, and we include these in your fixed price quote.

Crossing the border with your belongings

There are no routine border checks on the road between Dublin and Belfast, so personal household goods travel as they would on any other move. A few practical points are worth knowing:

  • Northern Ireland uses sterling, so budget for bills and deposits in pounds
  • Your car insurance, phone plan and bank may need updating
  • If you are moving a business, check customs and VAT rules for stock or equipment
  • Bring identification and your tenancy or purchase documents with you

We plan the departure around Dublin traffic, so a morning load usually means arriving in Belfast by late morning or early afternoon. That leaves the rest of the day to unpack, collect keys and get the essentials set up.

Moving from Belfast to Dublin

The route works just as well in the other direction. If you are moving south from Belfast or anywhere in Northern Ireland into Dublin, we can travel up to collect and bring everything back to your new Dublin address on the same day, with the same careful wrapping and fixed price.

Removals Dublin to Belfast: unloading at the other end

Belfast has a real mix of housing. Red brick terraces in the Holylands, Ormeau Road and around the Lisburn Road often have narrow streets and tight on street parking. Newer apartments in the Titanic Quarter and city centre may need a booked loading bay or lift time. Suburbs like Holywood, Lisburn, Carryduff or Newtownabbey are usually easier for parking and access.

We run one transit van with a driver who also moves, so flats and smaller homes usually go in one trip. For larger homes we plan trips in advance or arrange a larger vehicle where needed. Every item is wrapped and strapped, and the move is fully insured.

Student moves to Belfast

If you are moving to Queen's or Ulster University with a modest load, ask about a smaller move. We often fit a student's room into part of the van and keep the job quick.
