Ask anyone who has tried to get a three seater up a narrow staircase and they will tell you why sofa removals Dublin wide need a bit of planning. At Moving Service Dublin we move sofas between homes, from shops and from private sellers, and we protect them every step of the way.
You can find more on our services page, or see our furniture removals Dublin page if you have other large items too.
Measure Before You Move
Getting a sofa through a door is about angles, not just width. Before moving day, measure:
- The sofa's height, depth and length, plus the diagonal depth from the back top corner to the front bottom edge.
- The width and height of every door it will pass through.
- The width of the hallway and any tight turns on the stairs.
- The ceiling height on stair landings, which is often lower than you expect in older houses.
If the diagonal depth is smaller than the door width, the sofa can usually be tilted through. If not, it may need to come apart.
Different Sofas, Different Handling
Corner sofas usually split into two or three sections. Look underneath for brackets or bolts that hold them together. Recliners are heavy and the mechanism can be damaged if lifted by the footrest, so they are carried by the frame. Power recliners need to be unplugged and the cable tied up. Sofa beds must be strapped closed so the metal frame does not fall open on the stairs. Leather sofas scuff easily and need full blanket covering.
Removing Legs and Cushions
Most modern sofas have screw in legs. Taking them off can save a few crucial centimetres. Put the legs and screws in a bag taped to the underside so they arrive with the sofa.

Sofa Removals Dublin: Tricky Homes, Handled
Dublin housing creates its own challenges. Victorian terraces in Stoneybatter and Rathmines often have narrow front doors and a tight first turn on the stairs. Corporation houses in Crumlin and Cabra usually have straight stairs but small hallways. Apartments may have lifts too small for a large sofa, meaning it goes up the stairwell. We assess the route before we lift and work out the best angle to avoid scuffing walls or the fabric.
Every sofa is wrapped fully in blankets and strapped upright or on its side in the van, depending on its shape. We are fully insured throughout the job.
Collecting a New or Used Sofa
If you bought a sofa second hand, check the seller has removed cushions and confirmed it will fit out their door. If it is from a shop, ask whether it comes in sections. Either way, we can collect it and bring it into the room you want.
When the sofa arrives, we unwrap it in the room, refit the legs and sections and set it where you want it, so you are not left wrestling with it on your own afterwards.
