Wardrobe removal in Dublin is one of the jobs people most often underestimate. A big double wardrobe can be heavy, awkward and too tall for the turn on the stairs, especially in older Dublin houses. At Moving Service Dublin we move wardrobes of every kind, from solid wood antiques to large flat pack units with sliding doors, and we take them apart and put them back together where needed.
See our services for everything we offer, or read our furniture removals page for other large items.
Solid wood wardrobes
Older solid wood wardrobes are often very heavy, but many are built to come apart. The cornice on top, the base plinth and sometimes the doors lift off, which makes the main body lighter and easier to get around corners. We wrap each piece in blankets to protect the finish and carry rather than drag, so feet and edges stay intact.
If a solid wardrobe does not come apart, we measure stairwells and doorways first. Victorian and Edwardian homes in places like Rathmines, Phibsborough and Drumcondra sometimes have tight turns where a wardrobe only fits at a certain angle.
Wardrobe removal in Dublin: flat pack units
Flat pack wardrobes, including large models with sliding doors, are not designed to be moved fully assembled. Moving them in one piece often loosens the joints or breaks the back panel. We take them apart properly:
- Doors, rails and shelves removed first
- Screws, cam locks and dowels kept in labelled bags
- Panels wrapped and moved flat in the van
- The wardrobe rebuilt in your new bedroom
If you still have the assembly instructions, keep them handy, as they speed up reassembly.

How to prepare a wardrobe for removal
- Empty the wardrobe completely, including the top shelf and drawers
- Pack hanging clothes into wardrobe boxes or strong bags
- Remove mirrors if they are separate and can be detached safely
- Check whether the wardrobe is fixed to the wall with brackets, which is common for tall units
- Clear a path through the room and hallway
Built in or fitted wardrobes are part of the property, so they stay put. If you are unsure whether a wardrobe is freestanding, check behind it or send us a photo.
Moving a wardrobe to a new room
Not every job involves moving house. We also help with wardrobes moving between bedrooms, from a parent's house to a new flat, or bought second hand from a seller across the city. These smaller jobs are quick and priced up front.
Wardrobes with mirrors and glass
Mirrored sliding doors and glass panels are the most fragile part of any wardrobe. Where they can be lifted out of their tracks, we remove them first, wrap them in thick blankets and stand them on their edge in the van, strapped so they cannot fall. Where the mirror is fixed, we pad the whole face of the door and keep it upright throughout the move.
Disposing of an old wardrobe
We do not offer a clearance service, but if you are replacing a wardrobe, your local council recycling centre accepts bulky furniture, and many charity shops collect good condition pieces.
