Washing machine moving in Dublin sounds simple until you try to lift one. A standard front loader weighs around 60 to 80 kilos, mostly because of the concrete counterweight inside, and the drum can be damaged if it bounces around in transit. At Moving Service Dublin we move washing machines on their own or as part of a bigger move, carried carefully and strapped upright in the van.
See our services for the full range, or our small removals page if the washing machine is one of only a few items.
Preparing a washing machine for a move
The most important job is done before the van arrives. Here is what to do:
- Run a short empty spin cycle a day or two before to clear water from the drum
- Turn off the cold water supply at the valve and unscrew the inlet hose
- Disconnect the drain hose and let the last of the water run into a basin or bucket
- Wipe out the detergent drawer and leave the door slightly open to dry
- Fit the transit bolts if you still have them, as these lock the drum in place
- Tape the hoses and power cable to the back of the machine
If you do not have transit bolts, do not worry. We pack the machine carefully and keep it upright, which protects the drum on short Dublin journeys.
How we handle washing machine moving in Dublin
We use a sack truck and protective blankets to move the machine out of the kitchen or utility, through the hall and into the van. Floors are protected, door frames are watched on the way out, and the machine is strapped upright against the side of the van so it cannot tip or slide.
Older Dublin homes, particularly terraced houses and flats in converted period buildings, can have narrow hallways and steep stairs. We take the time to plan the route before lifting.

Single washing machine or part of a bigger move
Many customers call us just for a washing machine. Perhaps you bought one second hand on DoneDeal, you are passing an old machine on to family, or you are moving it from a rented flat into your new place. Others include it as part of a full house or apartment move. Either way, we give you a fixed price quote before we start.
Reconnecting at the new home
Once the machine is in place, it is best to wait a few hours before running it if it has been tilted at all. Remove the transit bolts before switching on, as running a wash with them in place can cause serious damage. Reconnect the inlet hose to the cold supply, push the drain hose into the standpipe and check for leaks on the first short wash.
If you are not confident with plumbing, a local plumber can connect it quickly, especially if the new home does not have a valve and standpipe already fitted.
Dryers and washer dryers too
We move tumble dryers, washer dryers and dishwashers in exactly the same careful way. Condenser dryers should have their water tank emptied before the move, and heat pump dryers are best kept upright too.
